Frequently asked questions
General
The active ingredient in sunless tanners is DHA (dihydroxy acetone). DHA is approved by the food and drug administration for use in sunless tanning products. DHA is naturally derived from sugar. It synthesizes with the skin’s proteins and amino acids in the outermost layer (epidermis) of the skin, working with your own natural pigments to produce a safe, natural looking tan.
DHA reacts with the dead skin cells, therefore, as those skin cells slough off, so does your tan. Each person has a unique skin cell cycle, affected by numerous factors including, but not limited to, hormones, genetics, age, medications, the environment and products used topically on the skin.
DHA was discovered 70 years ago. Since this time, there have been numerous studies to show that DHA applied topically to the skin has no reactions or adverse affects.
As with any new product being introduced on the skin, there’s always a possibility that any skin condition could temporarily worsen. We cannot tell for sure whether this will happen or not, as everyone has individual skin types and issues. We’ve noticed that clients tend to find their skin condition improves with the use of SunnaTan airbrush tans and products.
When you look at what’s in the SunnaTan solution, you will find that the ingredients are all designed to soothe and comfort the skin without irritation.
Waxing and shaving should be done the day before they tan, not the same day.
Both of these hair removal methods are a form of exfoliation. Waxing provides a deeper exfoliation and therefore cannot and should not be performed after the tan. It will literally remove the entire tan.
you can shave, but we suggest waiting at least a day, and using a fresh new razor along with a non-chemical shaving lotion or cream, (our SunnaTan Coconut Oil works fantastic for shaving!). We also recommend our tanning extenders if you plan on shaving every day.
our clients may or may not notice slight imperfections after their tan. Imperfections can vary from tan to tan and are generally unnoticeable. After application, the bronzer in the solution may shift, move, rub off in areas or collect in the creases of the skin, (around the neck, arms etc.). During the first 12 hours, slight imperfections may be more noticeable, (especially in fair skinned people). If you are concerned about noticeable imperfections the next day, 99% of the time, showering will blend these imperfections. If you haven’t showered yet, you can use a small bit of lotion to blend any uneven areas.
During the first 12 hours after application, the bronzer may slightly rub off on lighter clothing and sheets. If there’s any colour transference, the solution being natural sugar based, should wash out easily. If you are concerned about this happening, please wear dark clothing - it is best, and to avoid sleeping on white or lighter coloured sheets. If you do experience any staining, please refer to a professional cleaner or dry cleaner for assistance.
